Working from a January Mood Board
Mood boards narrow your options before you sit down to create, and that is exactly what Morag did here. She pulled the cool blues and frosty whites from the January mood board and paired them with a snow photograph – a simple concept that came together because the palette was already decided for her.
Hi there friends. Happy new year to you all! Let’s hope that 2021 brings better things across the world. I have been inspired by the gorgeous January mood board by Anke Kramer. It’s a wonderful mix of ideas that are perfect for this time of year.

We haven’t had a cold winter here in the UK for a couple of years, so I picked a photo of the last big snowfall we had. It is always such a treat when we get real deep snow!

I started my layout with white cardstock which I laid down some of the lovely Oakie Bear Blue Inklingz from the December colour kit. I hadn’t used this type of colour before and I have been so pleased as to how easy it is to use! I loaded a medium paint brush with water to activate the ink and then spread the colour onto some acetate before smooshing it onto my background. I also used the Nuvo Shimmer Powder (Jade Fountain) from November’s Colour Kit. These colours work so well together.

Next, I used the snowflake stamps from the December Stamp Kit. I stamped a second impression with some of the stamps for a faded and distressed look.

The pocket life cards are perfect for matting and layering as well as a focal point. I added the gorgeous acetate cards from the Pocket Life kit as well as some of those gorgeous puffy stickers from the same kit.

I really love the phrase puffy stickers from the December Pocket Life kit
To add more detail and interest, I cut the background at an angle and backed the cardstock with patterned paper. I layered up another pocket life card as well as some more of those lovely acetate embellishments. Don’t you just love that silver detail?!

To finish, I splattered the Oakie Bear Blue Inklingz to emmulate the sparklers in the moodboard. I love how the layout has turned out – perfect for a favourite photo.

Morag's Mixed Media Approach
- Her acetate smooshing technique creates watercolor-style backgrounds without needing watercolors. Apply ink to a piece of acetate, flip it onto cardstock, press, and lift. Each pull is different.
- She stamped snowflakes twice – once on scrap paper, then pressed the faded stamp onto her layout. That second impression gives a softer, distressed look that matches winter themes.
- Angled cardstock cuts behind the photo add depth without extra bulk. Cut a strip at a slight angle and back it with a contrasting color for a layered border effect.
- Nuvo Shimmer Powder mixed with the Oakie Bear Blue Inklingz gave her ink splatters that catch light. A few drops scattered with a brush fill white space without adding clutter.
- She mixed products from November, December, and January kits on one page. Older kit supplies gain new life when you pair them with a fresh mood board palette.
