Using Cut Files & Mixed Media | Missy Whidden

Hey, friends!  Missy here, and I have a layout to share using the 2016 April Hip Kits!  Like every month, every piece is just beautiful in all the kits.  I decided to create a mixed media layout today combined with Ashley Horton’s geometric heart cut file.  I enlarged the heart and cut it on white cardstock.  I used mostly papers from the Main Kit & Paper Kit in different shades of blue with a bit of that pretty coral pink color to back the heart.  I even used one of the Project Life cards to back it as well.  I used some white gesso on the cut file before adding some dark blue watercolor.  I used that same watercolor on the white cardstock background and added a bit of coral.  I wanted to stick to the colors in the Shimelle Starshine collection for this, and the background gave me a good base to create a photo strip in the middle.

I used one of the clear Shimelle stickers from the Embellishment Kit here as my title.  I stuck it to white cardstock and fussy cut it so the color would stand out.  I used a gelato to color the Simple Stories wood veneer XOXO, and I fussy cut that cute camera from one of the Project Life cards.  I added more of the Shimelle clear floral stickers under it for more pops of pink and then added some pink thread under it.

I backed my photo strip with some of the mint cardstock in the Cardstock Kit to separate it from the busy background.  Doing this makes the photos pop a little more and helps them to not get lost with everything else going on.

Here you can see the watercolor.  I mixed a few blue gelatos with a grey one and used my waterbrush to create the watercolor.  I also added a strip of the Amy Tan thin washi tape.  I ran the entire heart through my sewing machine for added detail.

In lieu of a fourth photo, I used this Shimelle sticker.  It’s the perfect size and color, and I love how it looks here.  I added a Simple Stories wood veneer paper clip and more of those Shimelle clear floral stickers.  They’re so pretty!

Here’s my process video if you’d like to see how this layout came together.  I hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!
