Hello, Hip Kit Friends,
Today I’m sharing a technique I use when I want to combine mixed media with a patterned paper background…
Want to create layouts like this? Our monthly kits include coordinated papers, embellishments, and supplies to bring your scrapbook pages to life.
I am a patterned paper kinda gal through and through, but using mixed media on patterned paper can be tricky…

I was super-excited about the April Cardstock Kit, as I love woodgrain patterns! And the muted colours in this kit are so beautiful and complimentary to the main and embellishment kits! I really wanted to use this pattern with my photo, but I also wanted to try out the April Color Kit on my layout…

So I ended up stamping the clustered hexagon set onto white cardstock several times, and fussy cutting the images out. I filled in about half of the hexagons using the solid hexagon stamp and the mini inks from the color kit. I clustered the stamped and fussy cut images on the top half of the page, slightly overlapping them, to create continuity and add dimension. I brought one of the stamped images to the bottom of the page to create grounding and balance.

I used the stamped images as background, and layered my photo and embellishment clusters on top of it. I used the April Main Kit for embellishing – to create visual interest, I layered a few chipboard frames behind the photo, and I used the ephemera pack to create the embellishment clusters. I added the title in the top right corner and completed the layout with scattering a few enamel hexagons across the page.

Using mixed media on the background of a layout can be quite daunting and it can be difficult to correct “errors” when things don’t quite go according to plan… This technique is ideal for crafters who are a bit hesitant about using mixed media directly on the background of a layout.
I hope you find my layout inspirational… be sure to add your layouts to the folder on the HKC Facebook group – I’d love to see how you mix mixed media with a patterned paper background!
Thanks for stopping by,
Antonia.
