LET’S TRY SOMETHING NEW – BORDER PUNCHES | JANA EUBANK | FEBRUARY 2023 HIP KITS

Hi, friends! Jana Eubank here. I love when a design team assignment gets me to think about my supplies in a new light. For this layout with the February 2023 Hip Kits, I was asked to focus on a technique with border punches. *blowing dust off the border punches*

I have a full drawer of border punches, but I mostly reach for my basic scallop-patterned edges. For this assignment, I wanted to challenge myself to use a punch that I have never used … AND use it in a unique way. Scroll down to see what I did and let me know if I accomplished that goal.

I chose to use a border punch by EK Success that creates a tear-drop pattern along the edge of the page. I thought it would be fun to utilize those openings by lacing string through the holes in a corset-style. I LOVE the way it turned out! Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the punch, but this technique would work with any border punch that includes holes.

First, I designed my layout, then cut a section out of the blue patterned paper on the left side. I punched the pattern along the edges, doing my best to line up the pattern on both sides. Next, I backed the opening with a contrasting solid from the February 2023 Cardstock Kit, then laced string through the teardrop pattern. I hid the ends of the string behind the photo.

My design features one main photo in the lower-left corner, and a complimentary embellishment cluster in the opposite corner. Both include large fussy-cut florals, chipboard frames, puffy hearts, and butterflies. I used the puffy letter stickers (such a cute font!) from the February 2023 Pocket Life kit to add the date/details to the bright blue label in the upper right corner.

Interspersed between the fussy-cut flowers and butterflies, you can see that I tucked in the chipboard frames (Main Kit) for more visual interest. Because you are only seeing part of the frame, you can cut these in half and use them in more than one spot.

I also added in some vellum pieces and puffy hearts from the Embellishment Kit.

From the springtime plaid to the lacing, to all of the details in the clusters … I LOVE the way this page came together. It was so much FUN to make!

I hope this layout inspired you to dust off your border punches and try something new with your February 2023 Hip Kits. I’d love to see your take on this technique. Link up your page in the comments below or come and share it with us in the Hip Kit Club Facebook Group!
