Hello friends, it’s Kimberly here, and I am so excited to share this happy little layout that Jana Eubank created using our May 2026 kits. Jana was working with some black and white photos of her husband and daughter, who have a sweet tradition of going to lunch together at their favorite restaurant every week.
Want to create layouts like this? Our monthly kits include coordinated papers, embellishments, and supplies to bring your scrapbook pages to life.
On this particular day, the two of them showed up twinning in the exact same sweatshirt, and Jana knew she just had to document that funny, heart-melting moment. What I love most is how she took those simple black and white photos and surrounded them with the brightest, most colorful, joyful papers from this month’s collection.
It is the perfect reminder that our everyday moments deserve to be celebrated in a big, colorful way.
For this page, Jana pulled from the May 2026 Cardstock Kit and the May 2026 Main Kit, which is packed with gorgeous patterned papers, and she finished everything off with the May 2026 Pocket Life Stamp Set.
Her clever design trick was taking one of our rainbow mixed media papers and, instead of using it as a full background like she normally would, she cut it down into a wide band and layered it across another patterned paper. She kept her other paper choices light and tonal on purpose so that all the rainbow color and whimsical elements could really pop forward.
From fussy cut florals to colorful butterflies to the cutest journaling die cuts, this layout is a masterclass in letting color do the talking. Let’s walk through exactly how Jana brought it all together.
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Mat Your Photos on Horizon Teal Cardstock
Start by matting your black and white photos onto the teal Horizon cardstock from the May 2026 Cardstock Kit. This cool teal tone gives your photos a crisp border and grounds all the bright color you’ll be adding later. Because the photos themselves are black and white, this pop of teal is the first bit of color that helps them stand out on the page.
Step 2: Layer the Rainbow Mixed Media Band Over Your Background
Instead of using the rainbow mixed media paper as a full background, cut it down into a wide band and lay it across the white and yellow broken-grid patterned paper. Keep your background papers light and tonal so the rainbow band and colorful accents pop forward. Jana also cut a strip of the colorful ovals paper to tuck in as an accent along the bottom of the page.
Step 3: Add Journaling Die Cuts and Green Branding Strip Caps
Head to the journaling die cuts in the embellishment kit and layer a teal library card along with a little pocket piece and card insert on the left-hand side to hold your journaling. To finish framing the mixed media band, cut the green branding strip from the oval paper into two quarter-inch strips and run them across the top and bottom of the band. This little detail neatly caps off the strip and gives it a polished, intentional look.
Step 4: Clip On the “Noted” Binder Clip With a Twine Bow
Pick out the lime green binder clip die cut that says “noted” and tie a bit of thin white twine into a little bow on it. Place it right at the top of your first photo for a fun, functional-looking accent. Jana tried adding a second clip to the other photo, but decided one looked best, so trust your eye and don’t feel like you have to double up.
Step 5: Place the “Laugh” Foam Title
Pull out the foam and cardstock stickers and add the title that says “laugh.” It is the perfect word for two people who showed up in matching sweatshirts, and the dimensional foam letters give your title some nice lift off the page. This word sets the whole playful mood for the layout.
Step 6: Fussy Cut and Cluster Your Florals and Butterflies
This is where the page really comes alive. Fussy cut flowers from the patterned papers in the Main Kit, and be sure to snip out the smaller floral elements too so you can build fuller, more dimensional clusters. Tuck the pink flowers and those teeny tiny orange florals into the top left and bottom right corners of your photos, then sprinkle in some colorful butterflies for extra whimsy. Jana‘s tip is to always grab two sets of the patterned paper so you have one to fussy cut from.
Step 7: Add the “Delightful” Subtitle and Whimsical Puffy Stickers
Add the black and white “delightful” die cut across the bottom of your photos as a fun subtitle, then tuck in a tennis shoe die cut and a little mug of paintbrushes for a creative touch. From the puffy sticker sheet, add a tab to the photo on the right and a paint palette near the sneaker, then scatter confetti dots around the word “laugh” to frame it with a little vibrancy. Finish this section with a small phrase tucked underneath your title to bookend it.
Step 8: Finish With Pocket Life Scallop Borders and “The Story” Stamp
For the final touches, reach for the May 2026 Pocket Life Stamp Set and stamp the scallop border along the top and bottom of the page to fill in any bare spots. Then choose a phrase to stamp onto your journaling card at the top. Jana went with “the story” using a dark gray ink, and it was the perfect finishing detail to tie the whole colorful layout together.
