Tutorial: Let’s Create a Mixed Media Background – Sophie Delorme – April 2026 Hip Kits

Hi friends! I am so excited to share this gorgeous quick-and-easy mixed media background reel from Sophie Delorme using the April 2026 Hip Kits. In under a minute, Sophie walks us through building a soft, dreamy painted background and layering in some of my favorite embellishments from the April 2026 Embellishment Kit and April 2026 Main Kit (with Patterned Paper). It is the perfect quick watch when you want a little crafty inspiration with your morning coffee.

What I love about Sophie‘s process is how she layers texture upon texture – splattered watercolors, a hexagon stencil pattern from the April 2026 Chicken Wire Texture Metal Die, flower and circle stickers, and travel-themed alphabet tabs – to build a finished page that feels joyful and full of movement. The white April 2026 Cardstock Kit gives the perfect canvas for those splattered watercolors to glow. Grab your April kits and follow along below!

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Mix Your Watercolors

Step 1: Mix Your Watercolors

Start by picking up two Lindy’s Magical pigments in a soft purple and dreamy blue. Tap them onto a clean palette, add a little water with a round brush, and swirl until you have rich, fluid color ready to splatter.

Step 2: Splatter Watercolor Across Your Background

Step 2: Splatter Watercolor Across Your Background

Lay a sheet of white cardstock from the April 2026 Cardstock Kit down and flick your loaded brush across the surface to splatter watercolor in a soft purple and blue swoosh. Add finer droplets on top by tapping the brush handle for a confetti-like spray.

Step 3: Frame the Page with Washi Tape

Step 3: Frame the Page with Washi Tape

Add a yellow checkered washi tape border from your April 2026 Main Kit (with Patterned Paper) around the edges of the page. The washi creates a clean, contained frame that makes the splattered background feel intentional and finished.

Step 4: Layer in Stenciled Hexagon Texture and Anchor the Photo

Step 4: Layer in Stenciled Hexagon Texture and Anchor the Photo

Use the April 2026 Chicken Wire Texture Metal Die to cut a honeycomb mask from cardstock and lay it over the splattered area. Tuck your focal photo into the center, then place the bold EXPLORE alphabet stickers right underneath as your title.

Step 5: Build Out Layered Embellishments and Word Tabs

Step 5: Build Out Layered Embellishments and Word Tabs

This is where the magic happens – layer in flower stickers, concentric circle accents, and puffy hexagon icons from the April 2026 Embellishment Kit. Add a WEEKEND AWAY tab on one side of the photo and a NEEDED THIS tab on the other so the eye has little stories to land on as it travels around the page.

Step 6: Finish with Journaling and Detail Accents

Step 6: Finish with Journaling and Detail Accents

Tuck in a tiny handwritten journaling card, scatter a few enamel dots and small accent stickers in your splatter clusters, and step back. That layering of paint, paper, and embellishment is exactly what makes a mixed media background feel alive.
