Floral Cut Files & Mixed Media | Missy Whidden

Happy Monday, friends!  Missy here, and I’m sharing my newest layout using the 2017 February Hip Kits.  I decided to use one of Zinia’s flower cut files for this page, but I used it in a different way.  You can cut this out and then roll the flower around to make a nice dimensional flower.  I liked how it looked as is, so I duplicated a few of them, resized them and welded them together to make one big design.  I used a beautiful Maggie Holmes patterned paper from the Main Kit to cut it on and then placed it on some of the Butter cardstock from the Cardstock Kit.  I used a lot of white gesso on the background first and then used some of the new Shimmerz AcriTonez Paints from the Color Kit.  I used the pink and white together, added a little bit of water and then smushed it down using some plastic packaging.  I added in some more Shimmerz from previous Color Kits…blues, pinks and aquas.  I also used a few gelatos from my stash to add in a bit of orange tones.

I love how these beautiful alpha Thickers from the Paige Evans Oh My Heart collection match everything perfectly.  These are in the Project Life Kit.  I staggered my one-word title here and machine stitched through it.  I punched a few hearts from patterned paper to add as little embellishments.  I also used one of the Maggie Holmes phrase stickers here and then added my journaling.

I love how this cut file turned out!  That Maggie Holmes paper already looks like a mixed media piece…those fun messy brush strokes really are beautiful.  I machine stitched (very carefully & slowly!) around each of the spirals with yellow thread.  I just love the added detail stitching gives.  I added in a few of the small die cut flowers from Pretty Little Studio as well.  Those are in the Embellishment Kit.

Here’s another look at the cut file and background.  I love the contrast of these soft colors.  I’m so glad I went with the soft yellow background.  I tried a few different patterned papers first and didn’t like how they looked.  I also added in some Crate Paper chipboard hearts and more of the Maggie Holmes phrase stickers.

Here are more of the Pretty Little Studio flower die cuts that Claudia designed.  I layered in a Maggie Holmes flower as well.  I layered some of the Maggie Holmes ephemera pieces under my photo as well as some foam adhesive for dimension.  I’m so happy I chose this color photo to use.  I almost used a black & white one.  This one wound up matching the color scheme perfectly!

Here’s one more close-up of the die cut and background.  Those beautiful flowers were the perfect piece to add here…I love using them for little clusters.

I had a blast making this…it’s so much fun to experiment and get creative!  Sometimes your layout turns out very differently than you expected…and it’s even better!  Here’s my process video if you’d like to check it out.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, and have a wonderful week!
