Hi everyone! Krystal here with this week’s sketch challenge. I designed the sketch with lots of flexibility in mind, so I hope you can make it work for you! Don’t forget to join us on the Facebook Group to play along with this week’s challenge and have a chance to wind a $10 Hip Kit Club gift certificate! Here’s the sketch I’m working with this week.

My assignment for this week’s layout was to make a Mother’s Day themed page with lots of layers and texture, and if you played along with my International Scrapbook Day challenge, then you know this is right up my alley! I started with paper No. 3 from Horizon by Pink Paislee that was in the April Main Kit. It’s the gorgeous one with the rainbow starburst, and I’d been saving it for the perfect layout. I decided to make hexagons instead of circles just because I thought they would be a fun shape to cascade down the page.

I used a hexagon punch to punch out several shapes from each color of the rainbow, then I arranged them on a sheet of white textured Bazzil cardstock from the Cardstock Kit following the sketch. Once I had them where I liked them, I decided to stitch around each hexagon with coordinating embroidery thread. It was a labor of love, but I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

To make my photo stand out a bit better from the busy background I created, I added a thin white border, another piece of that same rainbow paper, and one of the cards from the Pocket Life Kit that was also rainbow. For my title, I decided to use the alphas from last month’s Main Kit. I wanted the title to stand out, so I knew black would be a better option than the acetate alphas in the April Kit.

With my photo and title in place, it was time to start adding all of the little shapes along the sides of the diagonal. I used a small heart punch to create some hearts from the scraps of that same rainbow paper, then sprinkled some other embellishments from the kits that matched the colors on my page, keeping everything in rainbow order.

To finish it off and fill in the gaps a bit, I used a black pen to doodle some dots, hearts, and asterisks around the embellishments. I really love the whimsical touch this adds to the layout!

The sketch had a small cluster on the bottom of the page, so I added a piece of the branding strip, which I cut into a banner shape, along with one of the Horizon cardstock stickers and an exclusive puffy sticker, both from the Pocket Life Kit. I stamped the date with my roller date stamp and then finished the layout by drawing a sketchy black line around the border of the page. And here is the finished page!

Thanks so much for joining me here today. I hope you’ll find a way to make the sketch your own, and I can’t wait to see what all of you create!
