Hey Sunshine | Missy Whidden

Happy Monday, friends!  Missy back today to share a new layout using the 2017 April Hip Kits.  I love creating artsy mixed media backgrounds, so I decided to start with the Vicki Boutin Rub-Ons from the Project Life Kit and her awesome Art Crayons from the Color Kit.  I did not use any gesso on my page before adding the Rub-Ons.  I scribbled the crayons on top of them and used my fingers to smudge the color around.  The Rub-Ons act as a resist and create a really neat design.  It’s very subtle, and I did cover a lot of it up, but that is where my layout began.  I used a lot of embellishments and very little patterned paper.  I love how all of these awesome manufacturers’ products look all mixed together!

I used a few Project Life cards as layers behind my photo as well as some tissue paper from my stash.  I fussy cut two flower clusters from the Maggie Holmes floral paper and scattered around some exclusive Hip Kit sequins from the Project Life Kit, some chipboard hearts from Paige Evans Oh My Heart (in the Embellishment Kit) and a few Vicki Boutin word stickers.  I combined some of the Hip Kit exclusive chipboard alphas from the Main Kit with a shiny gold scripty puffy sticker.  Those gold dots are a combination of Heidi Swapp Gold Color Shine and some of the gold glitter dots punched from the Maggie Holmes specialty paper, which was in the Paper Kit.

So many embellishments right here!  I used some of the Pinkfresh Studio acetate pieces and chipboard stickers from the Main Kit and mixed in a fussy cut flower wreath from a Project Life card.  I added some vellum and white cardstock behind the acetate circle so it would show up clearly on top of my photo.  I jazzed it up even more by adding a few sequins on to of it.  I love how the gold dots look all punched out.

I love these colors!  I used more of the Pinkfresh Studio acetate shapes here as well as more Vicki Boutin stickers.  I cut the “You make me” piece from the exclusive cut apart sheet.  That fun patterned frame is from the Oh My Heart chipboard stickers, and I cut it in half to use above and below the photo.  I love the dimension here.  I added some foam behind the photo to raise it up.

One of the fun things about smudging these art crayons with your fingers is you can really see the awesome texture from the cardstock.  Here you can see how subtle the Rub-Ons are.  I also added one of the Pinkfresh Studio Leatherette stickers here.

Here’s one final close-up of all the beautiful colors and layers.

I hope this has inspired you in some way today.  These kits are amazing, and I am loving all the projects you guys are sharing on the forum!  Keep’em coming!  I’m including a process video if you’d like to check out how I put this layout together.

Thanks so much for watching, and have a wonderful day!

  1. How did you stitch the paper? Did you use a sewing machine, or hand stitch. What type of thread did you use? Also, when you used the thread, blue and yellow, is it just sewing thread, or was it DMC embroidery thread? Thank you. Elizabeth

  2. Hi, Elizabeth! I used my sewing machine to do all the stitching, so I used sewing thread. I also used sewing thread as layers…I just pull it off the spool and tangle it up.
