January 2013 Hip Kit… Sharing a great layout & masking technique…

Happy Tuesday!

Today I have a fun layout and a great masking technique to share with you.  I used this technique  and the products in our amazing January 2013 Hip Kit to create this page.  It is always great when you have an new idea… and it actually works out the way you envision it.

Last week when I was at Michael’s I saw these plastic mesh sheets in the embroidery department. I think they are used when embroidering with yarn. I thought they would work perfectly as masks for misting. They are really inexpensive… only .65 each! They are durable so they can be used over and over again. They come in different sizes and shapes.   I picked up a large 10”x13” rectangle and two different sized circles.  There are different size meshes – I got those with the larger holes.

For my layout, I used the larger circle.  I wanted to make sure that it layed flush against my paper… so I sprayed the back side with Elmer’s Spray Adhesive which gives a tacky type stick similar to a post it note or a cutting mat for a Cricut.  After spraying the mask, I placed it on a 12×12 piece of white cardstock.  I used the Mister Huey Dewey mist – and lightly misted the entire page.  I like that color a lot because it is soft and gives just enough color without overpowering the background.  (note:  a similar effect can be achieved using doilies for masks) This was the result using the plastic mesh circle…  You can see the detail of the masking technique better on the finished layout.  😀

I used the misted cardstock as the background for my layout.  :D  I am drawn to white or light backgrounds for my layouts lately – because I like adding misting and splatters to them – and it really shows up well on the lighter backgrounds.  Plus – the other goodies pop right off the page.  Here is my finished page.

I hope that my layout has inspired you to try a masking technique on a background for one of your layouts or cards.  If you do…  post a photo of your finished project on our Facebook page!!!  It is so much fun seeing the great things that you create.  Thanks for stopping by today.  Make sure to come back again tomorrow to see some more amazing projects created with our January Hip Kit.  Have a scrappy day!  xo – Kimberly –

  1. That’s awesome! I try to go into sections other than scrapbooking, and this idea is so great. It’s easy, and makes a great background!!
